UPDATE: Transgender Day of Remembrance

Here are a few ways you can be creative to raise money for this year’s TDOR 2012:

1.      Do a status update on your Facebook and ask your friends to make a donation via the eventbrite page.  No amount is small or big , it is the thought that your friends are supporting you and this event.   Here’s the event brite page:   http://tdor.eventbrite.com/.

2.      Ask 5- 10 of your closest friends and contact them personally and ask if them if they can make a personal donation to the event.  Let them know that this event is close to your heart.

If you have any other way to bring in donations, please do so.  Have them go directly to the eventbrite page to make that donation.  Many thianks gain for all your support and hard work!

Warmly,

Nikki/Tita Aida

President’s Message Nov. 2nd, 2012

November 2nd, 2012
TGSF members and allies,
Hello all and welcome to Fall and the Holiday season…
We will be attending the TG Film festival for the next mid month mixer, get your tickets ahead of time.
As is tradition with TGSF we will be having our end of month mixer holiday dinner at the Blue Muse on Grove st, I look forward to seeing you there.
There are a lot of things going on this month in connection with Transgender Day of Remembrance. This year more than any other Transwomen of Color has been the largest group of victims of violence and hate. We will be bringing focus to this horrible reality. The death that affected me the most was Brandy Martell. I am a resident of Oakland and for the most part feel safe. Until Brandy’s death; now I worry about the city that I’ve lived in for almost 2 decades. The reality of this was that I was at the corner Brandy died on an hour before she was murdered. I can’t go past that corner ever again with out being reminded that the world still has a long way to go. Or that it could have been me.
The start of the TDOR events is the Transgender Appreciation day on Nov. 18th at the City of Refuge on Howard st. If you can, please come and show your support for the transgender community.

On Monday Nov. 19th there will be a Million Trans March that starts on the steps of city hall and ends at the flag pole in the Castro for the raising of the Transgender Pride flag. It took a lot to make this happen and it is important that every trans person attends. We did this for all of us. At this event the folks from the TDOR planning committee will be there collecting donations for the memorial the next day.
The official TDOR memorial will start in front of City Hall at 5pm, hopefully we will have been successful in getting the Transgender Pride flag flown on top of City Hall.
At 530 we will proceed on sidewalks to the City of Refuge on Howard st. There our very own VP Jamie Wolfe will be co mc’ing the event. Also, Social Co – Chair Zoe Genzler will be spinning. The memorial will run from 630 until 830. The keynote speaker scheduled is Sylvia Guerrero, the mother of slain transwomen Gwen Arrajo. There will be a reading of names that have been lost to violence this year. There will be a slide show, an altar, as well as a transgender quilt on display. I hope to see you there, and bring a friend. And spread the word to everyone you know Trans and Cis. In fact tell every Cisgender person you know; it has been my experience tha most Cisgender people don’t even know about these deaths. We need the world to know. So get the word out.
So, it’s a busy month. We’ll all be ready for a little relaxation at the Holiday Dinner.
And don’t forget about the upcoming Holiday Dinner with the Diablo Valley girls in December!
I look forward to seeing you at these events, Carol Dauley.

Vote results

The unofficial results, pending notification by the Secretary; I was re elected to President ( Thank you! ), There was an amendment to the by laws changing the length of term from 1 year to 2 years, and then was accepted by the members present. There were several surprises last night, a former excom member or two attended and it was a great homecoming for all. I want to thank everyone for their vote. Carol Dauley

President’s message May 27th

Hi there! Well I decided that since this might be my last message that I would post it here on the new website. This was one of the goals when I was elected two years ago; to upgrade and better manage the social networking tools at our disposal. A major factor was finding the right person with the right skill set, available time, and dedication to do this correctly. I am so grateful for all the work Eden Will has done to make this happen. But she’s working on the last part of every task needed to be done. Find the person who will replace her. And that ladies and gentlemen is another of the goals that I still have today, start a program of mentorship and continuity that we as an organization need to survive. Too often this org has gone ‘fallow’ in a sense through change’s in leadership. To that end every person coming on to the excom has been advised to start training their replacement, cause believe me it will take that long. But it’s worth it.

We’ll be having the annual meeting this week at the blue muse. We postponed it to the end of this month and during the meeting one of the new bylaws will make that date permenant due to the end of the fiscal year ending on April 30th was two days after the annual financial report was supposed to be given.

There was a benefit for Transmarch 2012 at the Delores Park cafe on Friday May 25 called Gender Desperado Jamboree. It was an intimate performace, mostly cause it was packed! All the proceed’s go to the operation expense’s.

And you haven’t missed your opportunity to help, the next transmarch benefit will be on June 13th at the Buck Tavern on Market street. Come on down and lend a hand or just come have a good time.

I hope to see you all and get a chance to say hello at the annual meeting, Carol Dauley

Welcome

Hello! And Welcome to the new TGSF website. This has been a long time coming and I’d like to thank our Webadmin and Treasurer Eden Will. The new site is the fruit of her labors over the last six months. Of course as with any new technology there are bound to be a few bugs here and there. So be patient, if you encounter problems please send an email to the Webadmin using the link at the bottom of the page. So, now that I’ve gotten the housekeeping out of the way… we can start the next step in TGSF’s continued efforts to service the needs of the Transgender community. Welcome, and please, Participate. Carol Dauley
